The "magic hour" everyone repeats

Ask any expat forum what time extranjería appointments are released and you will get confident answers: Monday at 8:00, Wednesday between 9 and 10, midday, after 22:00. The trouble is that these hours contradict each other, almost never cite data, and get copied from thread to thread for years while the system changes underneath them.

We measure availability directly: automated checks of the official cita previa portal, province by province, with the results published openly and updated hourly — free, no signup. Here is what the data shows as of mid-July 2026.

What the data says

• There is no universal magic hour. In most large provinces — Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante, Cádiz, the Balearic Islands — appointments appeared most often in the morning. But in Valencia the recent pattern is the opposite: most availability showed up in the afternoon. If you only refresh at 8am because a forum said so, you miss exactly those slots.
• Appointments appear almost daily. Madrid had availability on 28 of the last 30 days; Alicante and Valencia on all 30. The real scarcity is not in the days but in the minutes: offices release slots in small bursts that sell out immediately.
• Patterns shift without warning. Barcelona logged more than 4,600 availability detections in 30 days — and still collapsed 97% in the final week of that period after three strong weeks. A month's pattern is not a contract: supply moves in waves, and a fixed rule like "check Monday at 8:00" stops working the moment the wave changes.

A note on honest numbers: we count the times our checks saw available appointments, not unique appointments and not appointments remaining. The time-of-day pattern — morning, afternoon, evening — is indicative and can vary by procedure and office.

How to use this in practice

• Follow your province's pattern, not the forums'. Every availability page shows which part of the day slots appeared in and which days had anything at all. That is data about your province from the last few weeks, not folklore from 2022.
• If you search manually, spread your attempts. Two or three checks inside your province's strong window beat twenty in a row at the same hour — the portal limits daily attempts and temporarily blocks sessions.
• If you cannot watch the portal, let something watch it for you.
