Renewing your TIE in Spain: deadlines, Mercurio and the appointments you need

Renewing the authorisation is not renewing the card

Two different procedures live under "renewing the TIE". One is renewing your residence authorisation — the file decided by the extranjería office. The other is getting the new physical card, which always goes through the police station: a fingerprint appointment and, weeks later, a pickup appointment. In an ordinary renewal they run in sequence: first the file is approved, then come the card's two appointments. If you hold a larga duración TIE, the authorisation does not expire — you only renew the card, and can go straight to the fingerprint appointment.

The deadlines: 60 days before, 90 after

You file the renewal between 60 days before your card expires and 90 days after — outside that window you risk a fine of up to €500. Two things worth knowing:

Filing stops the clock. With an application filed on time, your status is protected while it is decided, even if the card expires in the meantime.
Do not wait for an appointment to "start". The deadline is met by filing the application, not by getting the fingerprint slot. File first; the card appointments come later.

Mercurio: renewing without a filing appointment

Renewals can be filed online through the Mercurio platform with a digital certificate or Cl@ve — yours or a representative's. It is the difference between fighting for a filing appointment and submitting from home in an afternoon; if you do not have a digital certificate yet, getting one is probably the best investment of your whole renewal. Without one, the in-person route needs an appointment at your province's extranjería office.

The typical cases, briefly

Ordinary renewal (temporary TIE). Renewal file (Mercurio or in person) → approval → fingerprint appointment → pickup appointment.
Larga duración. The first card is issued for 5 years and, after the first renewal, for 10. There is no file to decide: you book the fingerprint appointment for the new card directly.
Students. Yours is the study-stay extension (prórroga de estancia) — a separate procedure, also fileable online; the new card follows the same fingerprints-and-pickup circuit.
Lost, stolen or damaged card. That is a duplicate, not a renewal: the same fingerprint appointment as ever — the portal's procedure covers "inicial, renovación, duplicado" — with the police report or the damaged card in hand.
