Can you get a cita previa appointment in another province?
When your province has had no appointments for weeks, trying the next one over is tempting. The portal lets you book anywhere — but whether the appointment is valid depends on the procedure. What the competence rule says, when you risk being turned away, and the alternative that actually works.
The portal lets you — the office might not
Technically nothing stops you from booking in another province: the cita previa portal lists all 52 provinces and never checks where you live. The problem comes later. For extranjería procedures, the competent office is, as a general rule, the one in the province where you reside or where you filed your application — and showing up with an appointment in the wrong province can end with a rejection at the desk, the trip and the slot both wasted.
Short answer: it depends on the procedure, and for the most in-demand ones the rule works against you.
Procedures tied to your province
- Fingerprints (toma de huellas). Done in the province of your registered address — the approval resolution says where. A fingerprint appointment elsewhere does not move your file forward.
- TIE card pickup. Always at the office where you gave fingerprints; the physical card is there. No appointment in another province can help.
- Renewals and file-based procedures. These belong to the office of your province of residence; another office cannot decide on a file that is not theirs.
When looking further afield does make sense
- If you have genuinely moved. A real change of address (with new padrón registration) changes the competent province — then you are not booking "outside", that is now your province.
- Specific procedures with their own rules. A few procedures — some information appointments and international-protection ones — work differently by province. Before writing anything off or booking, check the official procedure page for your province: the office list the portal itself shows for your procedure is the reliable reference.
The alternative that actually works: your whole province
Scarcity is almost never uniform inside a province. Police stations and offices in smaller towns release appointments more often than the ones in the capital's center, and an appointment at any office in your province is valid. So the right move is not crossing the provincial line — it is watching every office in your province at once.
