Asylum appointment in Spain: which cita you need at each stage and how to get it
The asylum process in Spain runs through several different Policía Nacional appointments, and mixing them up costs weeks. Which appointment belongs to which stage of the process, why they are so scarce in Madrid and Barcelona, and what you can do while the portal keeps saying no appointments are available.
One process, several appointments
An "asylum appointment" is not one appointment: the international protection process runs through distinct procedures, each with its own cita previa on the official portal. Knowing which stage you are at saves weeks of chasing the wrong one:
- Expressing the intention to apply (manifestación de voluntad). Your first contact with the system: you state that you want to request international protection. That is the POLICIA — Solicitud de asilo procedure; Madrid additionally runs its own first asylum appointment procedure.
- Formalising the application. The interview where you present your case and the application is formally registered. It is usually assigned from the first appointment onwards.
- Applicant documents. First the white receipt, then the tarjeta roja, renewed periodically while your case is decided — the expedition and renewal of asylum-seeker documents procedure.
Exact procedure names vary by province; some also publish information or document-submission appointments.
What is worth knowing about the timeline
Two factual points that matter, and that you should always confirm with official sources or a specialised organisation:
- From the moment you express the intention to request international protection, you cannot be returned to your country while your application is processed.
- Work authorisation generally arrives six months after the application is formalised — which is why getting the formalisation appointment early matters so much.

Asylum appointments are released on the same saturated portal as every other extranjería procedure, and in high-demand provinces — Madrid and Barcelona above all — the published slots are gone within minutes.
